21. Okt 2019

S4D4C organised the 2nd European Networking Meeting “Towards a European Science Diplomacy Roadmap” in Berlin

After S4D4C's first Networking Meeting in Madrid in December 2018, the second edition took place recently in Berlin. Titled “Towards a European Science Diplomacy Roadmap”, the event, which was organised at the Magnus-Haus in Berlin on October 10, was joined by around 90 people from 17 different countries. S4D4C welcomed a diverse range of professionals dealing with science diplomacy, amongst them diplomats, science counsellors, policy officers, grant managers, and academic researchers.

Opening speeches from Sabine Kunst, President at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and Frithjof Maennel, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Deputy Director-General for International Cooperation in Education and Research (BMBF), were underlining the importance of science as a universal language across borders and appealing for an even closer cooperation between scientists and diplomats in view of the current global challenges our society faces.

Moreover, roundtables on European Science Diplomacy, Practices of EU Science Diplomacy and the Cooperation dimension of science diplomacy between EU Member States were organised. During a poster session the S4D4C team could present the science diplomacy case studies conducted over the past few months.

The closing keynotes were framed by the European Commission's view on science diplomacy, including Halina Walasek, Policy Officer on Science Diplomacy in the European Commission’s Directorate General on Research and Innovation, Directorate for International Cooperation, and Diana Senczyszyn, European Neighbourhood Policy Officer, European External Action Service.

In the evening, the S4D4C together with the BMBF hosted a reception at the Museum für Kommunikation in Berlin.

S4D4C is coordinated by Centre for Social Innovation.
