Advancing NEB and technological solutions in INHERIT social labs

17. Feb 2025

INHERIT social labs advance New European Bauhaus values and tech solutions for sustainable cultural heritage renovation.

The second round of INHERIT social labs in each of the seven pilot cities has successfully concluded, marking another step forward in fostering participatory innovation for cultural heritage renovation. These collaborative workshops provided a platform for local stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions and explore innovative solutions tailored to their communities.

Building on the foundations laid in the first round of social labs, which focused on identifying key challenges and mapping stakeholders' needs, this second round took a more targeted approach. The discussions concentrated on two key thematic areas: the integration of New European Bauhaus values and the application of technological solutions for cultural heritage renovations. Participants examined ways to harmonise aesthetics, sustainability and functionality, ensuring that historic buildings remain integral and valuable to their surroundings. The discussions also highlighted best practices for improving energy efficiency, enhancing resilience and fostering greater inclusivity in heritage preservation efforts. ZSI is the lead partner of the co-creation activities and takes great pride in the progress made so far with the social labs, which emphasise stakeholder involvement and the co-design of solutions for sustainable cultural heritage renovation.

By bringing together public authorities, private sector representatives, academics and civil society organisations, the social labs continue to serve as incubators for forward-thinking solutions. This collaborative approach ensures that cultural heritage conservation evolves in a way that is community-driven, socially inclusive and technologically informed.

The INHERIT project will continue to build on the insights gathered in these first two rounds of social labs, following up with a third and fourth round of social labs that will further refine strategies and solutions. Ultimately, this process will culminate in the finalisation of a Lab Project, which will bring together the most promising concepts and co-developed solutions, ensuring their implementation and long-term impact.

The ongoing engagement with local stakeholders remains at the heart of the project, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable cultural heritage management across Europe. As INHERIT progresses, these participatory social labs will continue to shape the future of cultural heritage renovation, creating solutions that are both innovative and deeply rooted in the needs of the communities they serve.
