Galway and Roscommon Education & Training Board (Ireland)
Akronym: GRETB
Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board mission statement is to provide and facilitate comprehensive and inclusive education opportunities for all learners and promote, coordinate and contribute to the development of education services in Galway City, Galway County and Roscommon. There are 20 second level schools in the GRETB area and upwards of 60 adult and Further Education Centres, providing a range of Further Education and Training (FET) vocational skills and opportunities to a diverse range of learners. The GRETB is led by Mr. David Leahy , and two Adult Education officers, (AEO's) who support the delivery of a comprehensive range of educational programmes for a wide range of learners. The strategic service and FET plan is as follows:
- To deliver programmes that meet the skills needs of local and regional employers as aligned to the National Skills Agenda
- To prioritize the skill needs of the low skilled and the unemployed
- To up-skill those in employment with low educational attainment
- To develop links with industry to ensure that progression routes to employment are clear
In the FET division of GRETB , priority is given to early school leavers and the unemployed in line with the Government's Labour Market Activation Strategy while observing the distinct needs of the particular group of learners. All of the programmes are quality assured and this supports re-engagement in education and training on a particular rung of the National Framework of Qualifications, QQI/ FETAC. GRETB offers programmes from levels 1-6 on the framework, with level 1 providing basic education at a very fundamental level. Most adults returning to education who have left the education cycle at an early stage usually re-engage at level 3, as this places them on a level that supports active citizenship and positivity. Programmes delivered in 2013/14 were and are a direct response to the needs identified by communities at a local level and those identified by employers. Delivery is flexible, using varying methodological and pedagogical approaches. Staff in GRETB engage in CPD on a regular basis to ensure that their teaching skills are up to date and in line with industry requirements as well meeting the needs of the adult learner.
