Heidelberg University sees itself as a research university with a strong international orientation. Besides enhancing its disciplinary strengths, the University places special emphasis on maintaining the dialogue across traditional subject boundaries. The Centre for Social Investment (CSI) is a research centre of the Max-Weber-Institute of Sociology in the Social and Economic Sciences Department of the University of Heidelberg (UHEI). CSI was founded in 2006, as a central academic institution at the UHEI, so it has got nearly 11 years significant experience in the fields of social investment, social entrepreneurship impact measurement and social innovation in national and European context. CSI is cooperating with the social and political science as well as economics institutes of the department, and in addition maintains ties with the law and theological schools. Number of projects assure the CSI’s experience for this project, for instance, the current CrESSI – Creating Economic Space for Social Innovation in Europe project, which is to aid understanding economic foundations, measurement approaches, relation to technological innovations, policies and lifecycles of social innovations; recommendations for policies, development of teaching material. The recently closed ITSSOIN – The Impact of the Third Sector as Social Innovation project was verifying the impact of the Third Sector on socioeconomic developments in Europe. Otherwise, CSI also was part of the first big German research project on social entrepreneurship and is an active partner of the ICSEM project (International Comparative Social Enterprise Model Project). CSI delivered executive trainings and seminars on social entrepreneurship, social investment, and impact measurement and has a long experience in teaching these topics.
