The Project NewHoRRIzon aimed to promote the acceptance of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in Horizon 2020 and beyond. It developed the conceptual and operational basis to fully integrate RRI into European and national research and innovation practices and funding. NewHoRRIzon established a total of 18 Social Labs that covered all sections of H2020. Together with a diverse group of Research and Innovation (R&I) stakeholders, these Social Labs co-created tailor-made pilot actions to stimulate increased use and acceptance of RRI across H2020 and its various components. These pilot actions addressed a variety of R&I actors, including academia, business, non-university research institutes, Research Funding Organisations (RFOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the general and specific public(s) arising from technological controversies. Ultimately, the pilot actions developed and tested in the Social Labs contributed to R&I projects that fully recognized the significance of RRI.

NewHoRRIzon facilitated learning about how to implement RRI in H2020 and beyond through its Social Labs, two cross-sectional workshops, and two transdisciplinary conferences. It conceptualized and operationalized a Society Readiness Level (SRL) for R&I, focusing on aligning R&I processes and products with broader societal demands and expectations. Finally, NewHoRRIzon used various target-group specific strategies to disseminate best practices, promoting the acceptance of RRI across H2020 and generating long-term impact. This was achieved by utilizing existing spaces and networks as well as creating new ones.

NewHoRRIzon perceived RRI as a comprehensive and cross-cutting issue. It assessed the issue of RRI in each part of H2020 and worked towards a clear and applicable definition. The project diagnosed the state of RRI at the European and national levels, taking into account its global dimension. NewHoRRIzon designed, tested, assessed, re-adapted, and implemented pilot actions, including training, to encourage the integration of RRI into R&I in specific scientific and societal fields. From these actions, it developed narratives of successes and barriers of RRI and how to overcome them, which were widely distributed. The concept of co-creation also encompassed broader public engagement, realized through the development of pilot actions to promote RRI. Finally, NewHoRRIzon considered the global dimension of RRI by integrating non-European R&I stakeholders into the diagnosis of the state of RRI, the development of pilot actions, and the dissemination of project results.
