Introducing the Concept of Social Innovation to Urban Development

Presentation at UNIDO HQ at the Vienna International Center (VIC)

Bereich: Management & projektübergreifende Tätigkeiten

The Vienna Chapter of the Society for International Development (SID), an international NGO, organizes jointly with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization), ADA (Austrian Development Agency) and IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis), and five Viennese universities a series of international workshops and lectures since 2010. In the Winter Term 2013/2014 the overall topic was "Development of Human Settlements - Challenges for Sustainability". The two-day event was organized at the UNIDO premises in the Vienna International Center (known in Vienna as the "UN City"), in which about 200 international particpants convened to hold dialogues between academia (scholars, researchers and students), representatives of local initiatives and policy-makers responsible for driving sustainable development objectives.

The immediate beneficiaries are students and young academics from the participating universities, as well as leaders of local initiatives and policy-makers from developing countries. The two-day meeting offered ample opportunities for direct discussions and networking among the participants.

As the overall topic addressed change, challenges, crises and requirements of planning and innovation for development, the potential of social innovation in this regard was considered a relevant input to the plenary and the working groups (cf. the programme attached). Presentation contributed by Josef Hochgerner.
