Review: SUSTAIN EU-ASEAN project meeting in Bangkok
5. Nov. 2013
ZSI is a core member in the preparation and execution of the FP7 coordination and support action “SUSTAIN EU-ASEAN: Sustain and enhance cooperation on sustainable development between Europe and Southeast Asia.”
Climate Change as Global Challenge
As the release of the new IPCC report (2013) shows: climate change remains a major challenge for today’s societies. Research programmes and funding schemes have addressed the issue long ago. However, the exploitation and uptake of these research results just as well as research in general. SUSTAIN EU-ASEAN will start joint actions in both regions and enforce the interregional cooperation to optimise and internationalise research results in climate sciences.
Focus On
This coordinating action will focus on climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials issues and will aim to enhance collaboration between researchers in the EU and the ASEAN region. Addressing these issues in a coherent way is vital for sustainable development that leads to economic prosperity, social cohesion and environmental integrity. Both regions have developed innovative ideas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to adapt to climate change, improve resource efficiency and manage raw materials. Specifically, the coordination and support action funded under EU FP7 will establish connections between research projects in ASEAN member states (Brunei, Burma, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) and EU member states. The approach taken by the project is driven primarily by the assumption that a wealth of knowledge has been generated by EU-funded projects and other initiatives relevant for the ASEAN region. SUSTAIN EU-ASEAN will do so by clustering and twinning research projects, training researchers and research institutions on funding and exchange opportunities, and by developing specific proposals for more sustainable collaborations.
