The project LAC-ACCESS („Connecting high-quality research between the EU and Latin American and Caribbean Countries") makes an important contribution to the opening of the European research area to Latin American countries and the Caribbean. In 2008 the project entered its second year of operation. The installation of a small conference grant scheme for researchers from Latin America was the starting point for the promotion of direct exchange of ideas and results of research activities between individuals and institutions of both regions.

The first call for the awarding of scholarships was already opened in November 2007, the second followed in January 2008.
One major goal of the second phase of the project is the planning and establishment of a contact office for questions concerning S&T collaboration between Latin America and Europe.
