Tartu hosted the first Europe-China Knowledge Forum
30. Oct. 2024
The city of Tartu in Estonia is a European Capital of Culture in 2024. And it was the host city for the first Europe-China Knowledge Forum organised by the ReConnect China project. From October 24-26, more than 100 participants from Europe, Southeast Asia and China joined the forum with the general theme “ReConnect China Dialog? Bridging Gaps, Charting Futures with Europe”.
Among those participants were also ZSI researchers Gábor Szüdi and Philipp Brugner, who both moderated one panel and discussed as panellists on another. In his panel, Gábor contributed to the discussion on De-risking Artificial Intelligence: Convergences and Divergences between the EU and China on Regulating AI and gave insights into ZSI's research done on EU-China research cooperation in the field of digital technologies, including AI. The research report and two related policy briefs were published in September and October 2023 respectively. Philipp, in his panel on China’s Influence on EU Research and Education Collaborations and Academic Freedom, turned the spotlight on ZSI's work on research security in Europe on China. Drawing on the results of a survey conducted with Austrian scientists in spring of this year, a policy brief was published later in August (while the survey is now also translated into other EU languages for reiteration in more EU Member States).

The overall feedback to the first forum was more than positive and we are looking forward to its 2nd and 3rd edition, scheduled for 2025 in The Hague and for 2026 in Brussels.
