United Nations Environment Programme (Kenya)

UNEP works with many partners worldwide and is therefore at the heart of environment issues

Acronym: UNEP

UNEP was established in 1972 with the mission “to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations”. UNEP’s mandate was expanded and re-articulated by the Nairobi Declaration adopted in 1997 “to be the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, that promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimensions of sustainable development within the United Nations system and that serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment”. UNEP works with many partners worldwide and is therefore at the heart of environment issues: its main partners are United Nations entities, international organisations, national governments, non-governmental organisations, business, industry, the media and civil society. UNEP has a distinguished record of uniting in one organisation scientific environmental research and the subsequent formulation of policy advice.
UNEP core activities as defined in its strategy includes the following areas:
· Assessing global, regional and national environmental conditions and trends
· Developing international agreements and national environmental instruments
· Strengthening institutions for the wise management of the environment
· Integrating economic development and environmental protection
· Facilitating the transfer of knowledge and technology for sustainable development
· Encouraging new partnerships and mind-sets within civil society and the private sector
